Leaving Fall

Howdy, Neighbor. People have been telling Phil he’s a good storyteller for a long time… so we are trying something new and pretty-much non-sales Just sharing occasional sweet stories, tall tales, and life lessons learned around these parts. Northwoods Notes are a new, semi-bi-irregular peek into the heart and mind of Phil Frasier… you can read or listen… whichever you prefer… and you are receiving a copy because you’re a current customer of Frasier’s Plumbing and Heating, Inc. This time of year, there’s a sweet smell in the air every morning when I wake up. And I’m not talking about coffee.

It’s the alluring aroma of autumn.

When most things decay, they give off an unpleasant odor. But, when leaves change color and start dropping, they kinda smell sweet.

And after a long, hot, humid summer, I welcome a freshness in the air.

It’s beautiful, too.

The reds. The yellows. A pinwheel of colors mixed in with the pine trees. And I love watching the tamaracks’ needles go from green to gold.

When the sun’s rays hit those leaves and pine needles, it brings out a scent that punches you square in the nostrils. There’s nothing like it.

As these leaves literally enter the autumn of their year, they seem to take on a whole new life.

I love wading through a sea of leaves blanketing the forest floor…

Or casting through a coating of floating leaves on the lake.

I tell ya… watching a muskie leaping through those leaves to take your bait looks like something out of the movie JAWS.

This is a great time to be outside. On the water. In the woods. Everywhere. Anywhere. It does my soul good.

I even enjoy driving this time of year. The way the leaves kick up and flurry and scurry around my tires as I cruise down a country road… it’s almost like they’re whipping up the wind just to welcome me.

There’s something really special about autumn. It’s alluring.

It takes me waaaay back… to when I was three or four years old. Some of my earliest memories revolve around the fall. I’m grateful to still be living where I’ve always lived. It’s kinda sad to think there are people who go their entire lives without seeing what we see in our own backyards. We take it for granted.

So… where’s your favorite spot to look at the leaves? Do you mind sharing? I’d love to check it out.

In the meantime, I’ll be right here… soaking in the sights… and smells… of fall.

Take care, neighbor. Take good care.

P.S. – A Colorama calendar will tell you when the changing leaves are at their peak. It’s a handy tool for planning your Sunday drives in the country.
