What You Should Know About the R22 Phase Out

family-footer

R22 is a refrigerant that was standard in air conditioners and other cooling systems manufactured before 2010. The substance is made of a compound called hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HFCF), which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined to be an ozone-depleting substance.

Citing HFCF’s harmful effects on the environment, the EPA began restricting its use years ago, and a substance called R410-A replaced R22. On January 1, 2020, the EPA’s phase out of R22 will be complete, and manufacturing or importing the substance will be illegal.

Effects of the R22’s Ban

After R22 is phased out, it will be near impossible to obtain. If you have an older AC that uses the substance, and the unit needs to be refilled, repair technicians will only be able to use recycled R22 – that which has been taken from old units that have been replaced. Because there will be limited availability, the cost to obtain the substance will increase, making it more expensive to repair your AC. It is estimated that, after January of 2020, the price to refill an AC will be over $2,500.

Options If You Have an Older AC

When the phase out date comes, you are not required to have a new unit installed. However, because the cost of R22 is expected to rise, it is recommended that you have your current AC inspected by a professional at least once a year to prevent problems from arising.

You could also choose to replace your older AC with a newer model. Although the upfront cost to purchase and install a more environmentally friendly unit can be high, in the long run, this could be a more cost-effective option.
